With about 600 of 650 seats declared, Johnson\u2019s Conservatives secured the
\n326 seats required for a majority in the House of Commons, gaining 43 seats,
\nwhile Labour lost 55 to 197, the BBC reported.<\/p>\n
The Tories were heading for their biggest majority in parliament since the
\nheyday of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, according to exit polls and partial
\nresults.<\/p>\n
The pound jumped by about two percent against the dollar on hopes that
\nJohnson would deliver his promise to \u201cGet Brexit Done\u201d after years of
\npolitical deadlock over Britain\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
With a large majority of MPs, he will be able to get the divorce deal he
\nstruck with Brussels through parliament in time to meet the next Brexit
\ndeadline of January 31.<\/p>\n
Ratifying the deal would formalise the end of almost five decades of EU-UK
\nintegration, although both sides still need to thrash out a new trade and
\nsecurity agreement.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s European affairs minister, Amelie de Montchalin, was the first EU
\npolitician to welcome the indications of \u201ca clear majority, something that
\nhas been missing in the United Kingdom for several years\u201d.<\/p>\n
It signals a huge victory for Johnson, a former London mayor and foreign
\nminister who helped lead the Brexit campaign to victory in the 2016 EU
\nreferendum.<\/p>\n
Speaking as he was re-elected as an MP in west London, Johnson said: \u201cIt
\ndoes look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a
\npowerful new mandate to get Brexit done.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd not just to get Brexit done, but to unite this country and to take it
\nforward and to focus on the priorities of the British people.\u201d<\/p>\n
At his own re-election for the 10th time as an MP, veteran Labour
\nopposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, 70, admitted it had been a \u201cvery
\ndisappointing night\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said he would be stepping down after a period of \u201creflection\u201d, and would
\nnot be leading the party into the next election, which is due by 2024.<\/p>\n
In another major upset, the leader of the anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats, Jo
\nSwinson, lost her seat in western Scotland to the Scottish National Party
\n(SNP). \u2013 Labour collapse \u2013<\/p>\n
The Conservatives had been ahead in opinion polls for weeks but the scale
\nof their victory, after a wet and windy winter election, was unexpected.<\/p>\n
The party took a string of traditionally Labour seats in northern England
\nand Wales that had not voted Tory for decades, many of them enticed by
\nJohnson\u2019s Brexit pledge.<\/p>\n
An exit poll pointed to a Conservative majority of 86, the best result
\nsince Thatcher was in Downing Street in 1987, although the final result could
\nbe lower.<\/p>\n
By contrast Labour, under the leadership of committed socialist Corbyn, was
\ninitially projected to win just 191 seats \u2014 its worst result since 1935.<\/p>\n
Corbyn had promised a second referendum on Brexit, in a bid to appeal to
\nhalf of British voters who still want to stay in the EU.<\/p>\n
But he had focused Labour\u2019s campaign on a radical programme of economic
\nchange, including re-nationalising some key industries, which failed to woo
\ntraditional voters.<\/p>\n
Speaking in the early hours of Friday morning, Corbyn defended his
\n\u201cmanifesto of hope\u201d and maintained his policies were \u201cextremely popular\u201d
\nduring the campaign.<\/p>\n
But he said: \u201cBrexit has so polarised and divided debate in this country,
\nit has overridden so much of a normal political debate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Corbyn is personally unpopular and dogged by accusations of sympathising
\nwith proscribed terror groups and failing to tackle anti-Semitism within the
\nLabour party.<\/p>\n
This is Labour\u2019s fourth successive electoral defeat \u2014 and the second under
\nCorbyn \u2014 which could see the party out of power for another five years.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Softer Brexit?<\/p>\n
The anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats also had a tough night, losing Swinson
\nand projected to win just 13 seats, only one more than in 2017.<\/p>\n
Swinson had already faced criticism for failing to capitalise on strong
\nEuropean Parliament elections earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Her campaign to reverse Brexit without even a new referendum was unpopular,
\nwhile efforts to create a \u201cRemain\u201d alliance to stop Brexit failed.<\/p>\n
Nigel Dodds, the British parliament leader of the Democratic Unionist Party
\nwhich propped up the Tories under Johnson\u2019s predecessor Theresa May, lost his
\nseat in North Belfast.<\/p>\n
By contrast the Scottish National Party (SNP), which wants to stop Brexit
\nand deliver an independent Scotland, was forecast to win 55 of 59 seats
\navailable.<\/p>\n
If anti-Brexit parties failed to work together, the same is not true of
\ntheir rivals.<\/p>\n
Eurosceptic leader Nigel Farage claimed to have boosted Johnson\u2019s chances
\nby declining to stand candidates for his Brexit Party in Tory-held seats.<\/p>\n
The Brexit Party, like its former incarnation UKIP, is not predicted to win
\nany seats, however.<\/p>\n
Johnson has promised to put his Brexit plan to parliament before the
\nChristmas break, although it will not likely be ratified until January.<\/p>\n
He has then just 11 months to agree a new partnership with the EU before a
\npost-Brexit transition period ends in December 2020.<\/p>\n
But with a comfortable majority in parliament, analysts note he could
\nchoose to extend that time and negotiate a closer trade deal than previously
\nenvisaged.<\/p>\n
