NEW YORK, Sept 29, 2019 (BSS) \u2013 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a
\nstrong word of warning against the corrupt people, categorically saying that
\nthe government\u2019s stern action against the corrupt and dishonest persons will
\ncontinue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve taken stringent action against terrorism, militancy, corruption and
\ndrugs \u2026 I want to tell one word clearly that if anybody earns money by
\nholding dishonest path and his\/her irregularities, chaos or dishonest means
\nare found out, stern action will continue against those persons whoever they
\nmight be, even if they\u2019re my party men,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister was addressing an expatriate civic reception accorded
\nto her by the US Awami League at Hotel Marriott Marquis here on Saturday
\nafternoon.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said it becomes very difficult for the people and their
\nchildren to lead an honest life when the society is crippled by persons who
\nearned money through dishonest means.<\/p>\n
She said those who want to lead an honest life have to move with some
\nlimitations. \u201cBut those who lead a lavish life through the money earned by
\ndishonest means always use this and that brands and create a chaotic
\nsituation,\u201d she said<\/p>\n
The prime minister said living and livelihood of the people who want to
\nlead life honestly have become difficult in the dominance of the dishonest
\npeople.<\/p>\n
She said a question is naturally arisen in the minds of the children of
\nthe honest people that why their families cannot lead a luxurious life like
\nthe children of dishonest people. \u201cNaturally this thinking pushes the people
\ntowards a dishonest way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Referring to irregularities in development schemes, Sheikh Hasina said the
\ngovernment is undertaking massive uplift schemes. \u201cBangladesh would have been
\ndeveloped further if every single taka of the projects had been spent
\nproperly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow I\u2019ve to find out where are the loopholes and lapses while who is
\naffecting this place and how,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said she asked for looking into another thing that
\nwhose earnings are what and how they lead life. \u201cWe\u2019ve to found out it and
\nthen we could protect our society and new generations by removing this menace
\nand unholy competition,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said the drive against the narcotics will also continue as it
\ndestroys a family and country. \u201cWe\u2019ll track down those involved in the drug
\npeddling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said: \u201cWe\u2019ve increased the size of the budget seven
\ntimes. The size of the budget during the BNP-Jamaat regime was Tk 61,000
\ncore. But we\u2019ve been able of placing Tk 5,23,190 crore budget this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coming down hard on some people who are always critical of the government,
\nSheikh Hasina said these people do not feel comfort when the development of
\nthe country is made. \u201cThey always lodge complaints to the foreigners against
\nthe government and country out of jealousy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
About the BNP\u2019s debacle in the last general elections, the prime minister
\nsaid the BNP was not sincere in the election rather the party was engaged in
\nnomination trade.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, said the people of the
\ncountry kept confidence and trust in her party as they know the country will
\nbe developed and their lot will be changed if Awami League remains in power.<\/p>\n
She also posed a question that why the people will cast vote for BNP which
\nmade the party chairman a convict?.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said Khaleda Zia\u2019s one son was convicted for laundering
\nmoney, while her another son was detained while going to play casino in
\nSingapore.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said the people\u2019s strength is the biggest strength and Awami
\nLeague believes in the people\u2019s strength. \u201cAwami League came to power with
\nthe strength of the people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the country\u2019s tremendous development in different sectors, the
\npremier said the grassroots people are being mostly benefitted from this
\nuplift.<\/p>\n
About taking foreign loan, the prime minister said her government is taking
\nsteps carefully so that the country is not affected due to taking this loan.<\/p>\n
Pointing out her government\u2019s steps for the welfare of the expatriates,
\nSheikh Hasina said her government gave permission of establishing three NRB
\nbanks.<\/p>\n
In this connection, she urged bank authorities to take initiatives so that
\nexpatriates are attracted to invest in the country. \u201cWe\u2019ve also taken steps
\nso that expatriates can send money through legal channels,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said the government has purchased 10 aircraft from
\nBoeing company. \u201cDiscussion is underway to resume Dhaka-New York flight and
\nwe\u2019ve already improved our airport security in this regard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Referring to opening of embassies and consulate offices in different
\nplaces, Sheikh Hasina said a consulate office will be opened in Florida.<\/p>\n
The premier said her government wants to present a better and beautiful
\nlife to the people of Bangladesh by eliminating terrorism, militancy,
\ncorruption and drugs which the Father of the Nation had dreamt.<\/p>\n
\u201cBangladesh will be prosperous and developed country in the world and
\nhunger and poverty-free Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu,\u201d she hoped.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh\u2019s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Masud Bin Momen
\ndelivered the welcome address, while Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen was
\npresent on the dais.<\/p>\n
At the outset of the speech, a minute\u2019s silence was observed as a mark of
\nprofound respect to the martyrs of the language movement, liberation war,
\nBangabandhu and other martyrs of the August 15 carnage and four national
