\nconferred with the prestigious \u201cVaccine Hero\u201d award in recognition of
\nBangladesh\u2019s outstanding success in vaccination.<\/p>\n
Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisations (GAVI), a global Vaccine
\nAlliance, conferred the award on the prime minister at a ceremony at the UN
\nHeadquarters in New York on Monday evening local time.<\/p>\n
Receiving the award from GAVI Board Chair Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the prime
\nminister dedicated it to the people of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe award that I received today is not of mine, the award belongs to the
\npeople of Bangladesh and I dedicated this award to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister simultaneously urged the countrymen to continue
\nimmunisation programme which will keep their children healthy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe healthy children will run the country and take the country forward \u2026
\na healthy generation is very much necessary for economic development,\u201d she
\nsaid, adding healthy new generations will build a prosperous and developed
\nSonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said the country was freed from polio, cholera and various
\ncommunicable diseases. \u201cIn this regard, we got cooperation from the GAVI,\u201d
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
Before handing over the award, a citation was read out by Dr Ngozi Okonjo-
\nIweala.<\/p>\n
The citation said the \u2018Vaccine Hero\u2019 award has been introduced by the GAVI
\nto recognize global figures whose dedication to the Vaccine Alliance\u2019s
\nmission has played a key role in helping GAVI and its partners to protect
\nhundreds of millions of children across the globe.<\/p>\n
It said this is an award for those who have set out a clear ambition and
\ndisplayed urgency in providing life saving vaccines to children and ensuring
\nthat no child is left out.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina is a true champion of immunisation as well as rights of the
\nchildren and the women empowerment, the citation reads.<\/p>\n
Earlier in her written speech, Sheikh Hasina hoped to reach the target of
\n\u2018vaccines for all\u2019 in the country well ahead of 2030. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to
\nimmunising under universal health coverage with support from international
\ncommunity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She recalled that Bangladesh was also honoured with GAVI Alliance Awards in
\n2009 and 2012 for its outstanding performance in improving the child
\nimmunization status.<\/p>\n
Terming immunization as the greatest public health success story in
\nBangladesh, the prime minister extended her thanks to the Vaccine Alliance
\nand other partners for their continued support and contributions to this end.<\/p>\n
The premier also elaborated her government\u2019s further steps to integrate
\nimmunisation with other primary healthcare services at all levels.<\/p>\n
Referring to influx of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Cox\u2019s Bazar, the
\nprime minister said the sudden exodus of 1.1 million Rohingyas from Rakhine
\nState is a formidable challenge to Bangladesh\u2019s health sector.<\/p>\n
She said extraordinary measures were taken to raise immunity of the
\nRohingyas through vaccination campaign and routine immunization although they
\ndid not have access to any proper health services in Myanmar.<\/p>\n
Apart from this, Sheikh Hasina said, her government also successfully
\nconducted cholera vaccination programme, dealt with diphtheria and measles
\noutbreak at the Rohingya camps.<\/p>\n
Besides, Bangladesh is the first country to use GAVI\u2019s updated fragility,
\nemergency and refugees\u2019 policy to carry out GAVI-supported vaccination
\ncampaigns for Rohingyas in Cox\u2019s Bazar in 2017.<\/p>\n
The prime minister reiterated that ensuring health and nutrition to all has
\nalways been a commitment to the people.<\/p>\n
In this regard, she vowed to advance the country to a stage where it would
\nbe able to ensure basic healthcare and sufficient nutrition for all through
\nVisions 2021 and 2041.<\/p>\n
Chief Executive Officer of GAVI Seth Berkley also spoke at the function,
\nwhile Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and Health Minister Zahid Maleque
\nwere present on the dais.<\/p>\n
