\ncalled upon the probationary police officers to be \u201cfriend of the people\u201d
\nduring their bad time as she addressed the passing-out parade of the 36th BCS
\nbatch of assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) here.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrepare your mindset to be friend of the people whenever they are in
\ndanger as you are going to enter your professional life upon completion (one-
\nyear) the basic training,\u201d she told the function at Bangladesh Police Academy
\nin Sardah.<\/p>\n
She expressed her firm belief that the new police officers would engage in
\nensuring overall welfare of the country with their acquired knowledge,
\ndiscipline, professionalism, honesty, and integrity.<\/p>\n
The premier reminded the fresher that their fathers, mothers, sisters and
\nbrothers are among the people, saying, \u201cSo, you should dedicate yourselves to
\nserving the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Recalling the first passing out parade of Bangladesh Police that was
\nreviewed by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on May 9,
\nin 1972, she said that Bangabandhu had developed the police force likewise
\nother organizations of the country.<\/p>\n
The premier quoting Bangabandhu as saying, \u201cYou are the police of an
\nindependent country. You are not the police of foreign ruler, but police of
\nthe people. Your duty is to serve the people, love the people and help the
\npeople in their bad days.\u201d<\/p>\n
The government has already introduced \u2018999\u2019 emergency service and people are
\ngetting required help from the police after calling over the phone, she said,
\nadding, \u201cYou should do such works regularly.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prime minister highly appreciated the police force for their recent
\nrecruitment of 10,000 police constables without committing any corruption and
\ngetting bribes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis approach is helping police gain people\u2019s confidence and trust in
\nthem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Urging the police members to gain people\u2019s confidence and trust, the prime
\nminister said they will have to work in such a way that the people think that
\nthe police will help them.<\/p>\n
Recalling the contribution of police in the Liberation War, the premier
\nsaid that Bangladesh Police had been rewarded with the \u201cIndependence Award
\n2011\u201d for their glorious contribution to the 1971 war.<\/p>\n
She also directed the new ASPs to uphold the glorious role of Bangladesh
\nPolice personnel during the Great War of Liberation following the path of
\ntheir predecessors with patriotism, professionalism and unbound bravery.<\/p>\n
On her arrival near the saluting dais, the prime minister was received by
\nHome minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad
\nJaved Patwary and Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy Mohammad Najibur
\nRahman.<\/p>\n
The premier was given a guard of honour by a smartly turned out police
\ncontingent.<\/p>\n
Ministers, parliament members, diplomats of different countries, high civil
\nand military officials were present on the occasion.<\/p>\n
Probationary officer Sarmin Akter Chumki conducted the parade as the parade
\ncommander.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said that the government is continuously implementing
\nvarious development programmes for the police alongside providing them with
\nfacilities such as accommodation, ration, treatment, logistics, vehicles and
\ntrainings.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina took salute, reviewed the parade by riding on an open jeep
\nand distributed medals among the best probationary ASPs.<\/p>\n
As many as 117 ASPs, including 17 female ones, took part in the training.<\/p>\n
Among the trainees, Md Khairul Kabir received the award of \u201cBest Shooter\u201d,
\nwhile Md Abdullah-Al-Mamun of \u201cBest Field Performer\u201d, Md Salahuddin, of \u201cBest
\nHorsemanship\u201d, Saiful Islam Khan of \u201cBest Academic\u201d and Md Salahuddin of
\n\u201cBest Probationer.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prime minister later planted sapling of a mango tree on the academy
\ncampus.<\/p>\n
She also took part in a photo session with the probationary officers.<\/p>\n
The premier also cut a cake marking the passing out parade of the ASP\u2019s
\n36th BCS batch.<\/p>\n
Mentioning that the stable law and order situation is a pre-requisite for
\nthe country\u2019s development, Sheikh Hasina asked the police force to remain
\nalert to maintain the law and order for country\u2019s overall development.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said \u201cThe pace of economic activities is accelerated
\nthrough ensuring peace and stability,\u201d adding that Bangladesh will be free
\nfrom hunger and poverty as dreamt by the Father of the Nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cBangladesh is going ahead economically. The government is continuously
\nrecruiting manpower in police for giving the people services. As many as
\n49,200 police personnel have already been recruited in the force,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She said to build a secured peaceful country, her government has been
\nimplementing a massive work plan for raising overall capability of the police
\nby strengthening its infrastructure and human resources management.<\/p>\n
The prime minister however highly appreciated the police force for
\nsuccessfully containing the terrorism and militancy and asked them to
\ncontinue the ongoing crackdown on drugs until stamping out the social menace.<\/p>\n
Highlighting various measures for the overall development of the police,
\nshe said \u201cWe have formed various special units for Bangladesh police such as
\n\u201cAnti-Terrorism Unit\u201d for combating terrorism and militancy, industrial
\npolice, Police Bureau of Investigation, tourist police, naval police and two
\nsecurity and protection battalions.\u201d<\/p>\n
The premier also said that initiative has already been taken to form a
\n\u201cGuard and Protection Police\u201d.<\/p>\n
She stressed the need for taking proper training to accelerate the
