The UN Secretary-General\u2019s spokesperson, St\u00e9phane Dujarric, conveyed Guterres\u2019 message to reporters late Thursday night, stating that the UN chief is \u201cvery concerned\u201d about the developments between the two neighboring countries and is \u201cclosely monitoring\u201d the situation.<\/p>\n
Calling for calm, the Secretary-General emphasized that the recent retaliatory actions taken by both sides have significantly heightened tensions. \u201cTo prevent further deterioration, the Secretary-General urges both India and Pakistan to act with the utmost restraint,\u201d said Dujarric.<\/p>\n
Guterres reiterated the UN\u2019s longstanding position that any issues between India and Pakistan should be resolved peacefully through \u201cmeaningful dialogue and mutual engagement.\u201d He added, \u201cWe believe this is both possible and necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
The appeal comes in the wake of Tuesday\u2019s deadly shooting in Indian-administered Kashmir\u2019s Pahalgam, where gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists, killing 26 people, including 25 Indian nationals. In response, India blamed Pakistan and took several retaliatory measures on Wednesday, including the cancellation of Pakistani visas and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.<\/p>\n
Pakistan responded on Thursday with its own set of countermeasures\u2014canceling visas for Indian citizens, suspending bilateral trade, and closing its airspace to Indian aircraft.
