The United States and Britain launched
\nnew strikes on Yemen’s Huthis Monday, saying their second round of joint
\nmilitary action against the Iran-backed rebels was in response to continued
\nattacks on Red Sea shipping.<\/p>\n
American and British forces carried out a first wave of strikes against the
\nrebel group earlier this month, and the United States launched further air
\nraids against missiles that Washington said posed imminent threats to both
\ncivilian and military vessels.<\/p>\n
But the Huthis have vowed to continue their attacks — just one part of a
\ngrowing crisis in the Middle East linked to the Israel-Hamas war, which has
\nraised tensions across the region as well as fears of a broader war directly
\ninvolving Iran.<\/p>\n
The latest US-UK strikes were against “eight Huthi targets in Yemen in
\nresponse to the Huthis’ continued attacks against international and
\ncommercial shipping as well as naval vessels transiting the Red Sea,”
\nWashington and London said in a joint statement with other countries that
\nsupported the military action.<\/p>\n
“These precision strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities
\nthat the Huthis use to threaten global trade and the lives of innocent
\nmariners,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
