DHAKA, Sept 24, 2018 \u2013 Bangladesh\u2019s first geostationary
\ncommunication satellite Bangabandhu-I handed over preliminarily today by the
\nFrench manufacturing company Thales Alenia Space to the telecom regulator\u2019s
\nproject officials.<\/p>\n
Thales has done the move following the satisfactory result from the final
\ntechnical test carried during the solar eclipse that occurred on September
\n21.<\/p>\n
Talking to BSS today, Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited
\n(BCSCL) Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood said Thales handed over the control of
\nthe satellite preliminarily.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are hopeful of getting full control by the end of this month or the
\nfirst week of October,\u201d said Dr Mahmood.<\/p>\n
Replying to a query, the BCSCL Chairman said they have experienced
\nsatisfactory result from all technical tests. \u201cSo, Bangabandhu-I is now ready
\nfor commercial operation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials said, Thales handed over the Bangabandhu-I to the project
\nofficials of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC)
\nand the project office, which will give it to the authority of BCSCL.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the trial broadcast of Bangabandhu-I has been successfully done
\nthrough the on air of South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship
\n2018, said Dr Mahmood.<\/p>\n
Thales launched the Bangabandhu-I in May 12 from Florida of America at a
\ncost of Taka 2,765 crore and according to the plan, it will reach break-even
\nwithin seven years of starting its commercial service.<\/p>\n
The satellite is now being run by local engineers with the assistance of
\nThales\u2019s experts.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, BCSCL has international consultancy firm Thaicom for
\ntwo years to run marketing and sale of the connectivity of Bangabandhu-I in
\nsix countries, including four neighbours. The Thai firm is currently active
\nin around 20 countries.<\/p>\n
Mentioning that BCSCL mobilised a good and efficient marketing team, Dr
\nMahmood earlier said, \u201cOur agency will mainly concentrate on the
\ninternational business rather engaging in local market\u201d.<\/p>\n
Located at the 119.1 east geostationary slot, Bangabandhu-I would cover
\nthe SAARC countries and Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Tajikistan,
\nKyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkestan and a part of Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n
The coverage is the strongest in Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Sri
\nLanka, Nepal and Bhutan, for which these six countries have initially been
\nchosen for business.<\/p>\n
The satellite\u2019s operations include \u201cdirect-to-home\u201d service for TV
\nchannels, VSAT (very small aperture terminal), backhaul and network
