DHAKA, Sept 19, 2018 \u2013 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged\njournalists to use their professional scope for country\u2019s greater interest,
\nsaying the freedom of press should not to be used in a childlike manner.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe fully believe in freedom of press, however it should not to be used
\nin childish manner and everybody should remain careful about this,\u201d she said,
\nadding that \u201cmedia should play a due role in welfare of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prime minister was distributing cheques of financial assistance from
\nJournalists Welfare Trust among sick, financially insolvent and injured
\njournalists in accidents at a function at Prime Minister\u2019s Office (PMO) here.<\/p>\n
The premier said her government had assumed power in 2009 with a promise
\nof changing the fate of people. Now, everybody would acknowledge that fortune
\nof the people of the country has really changed, she said.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said her utmost goal is to materialise the dream of Father
\nof the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build a happy and
\nprosperous Bangladesh as she thinks it as her duty. So, she never bothered
\nwho wrote against her or in her favour.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always do anything with self confidence asking myself the question \u2014
\n\u201cAm I doing the right or wrong, and I guide myself on that principle,\u201d the
\nprime minister said.<\/p>\n
Terming the media as the mirror of the society, Sheikh Hasina said the
\nmirror has been widened with the addition of electronic media alongside
\nnewspapers. Now media comes to light many problems of the people from far
\nflung areas, which is really helping the government to stand beside the
\ndistressed people.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said everybody has the right to give speech, and she
\nalways believes in it. So, her government never gagged the mouth of anybody,
\nrather has taken the necessary initiatives to protect the rights of media.<\/p>\n
Pointing out the steps taken by her government for welfare of the
\njournalists, the premier said her government has constituted the welfare
\ntrust for the journalists in line with her experience that none stand beside
\nthem during the days of their woes, particularly when they loss job or fell
\nin any accident.<\/p>\n
She announced giving Taka 20 crore more donation to the Bangladesh
\nJournalists Welfare Trust Fund.<\/p>\n
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu presided over the function while
\nPM\u2019s Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, State Minister for Information
\nTarana Halim, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information
\nMinistry AKM Rahmatullah were present as special guests.<\/p>\n
Information Secretary Abdul Malek gave welcome address while Director
\nGeneral of Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Shah Alamgir also addressed
\nthe function, among others.<\/p>\n
President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Molla Jalal,
\nits Secretary General Saban Mahmud, President of Dhaka Union of Journalist
\n(DUJ) Abu Jafor Surja and its General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury also
\nspoke on the occasion.<\/p>\n
The prime minister distributed cheques of Taka 85 lakh among 113
\njournalists.<\/p>\n
Pointing out the personal relation of Bangabandhu with country\u2019s famous
\njournalists and his involvement with journalism profession for some time as
\nthe correspondent of the daily Ittehad in Kolkata, the premier said she also
\nconsider herself as a family member of journalists.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said Bangabandhu had absorbed most of the journalist in
\nsuitable government job and gave monthly allowance following closure of the
\nnewspapers except four in 1974.<\/p>\n
Bangabandhu had done this as most of the newspapers even could not
\nafford to give salary to the newsmen due to financial crisis, she said,
\nadding that Bangabandhu had formed a committee with senior journalists but
\nunfortunately many members of that committee emerged as critics after his
\nassassination.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said her government has opened mass media for private
\nsector aimed at creating job opportunities. Newspaper industry has also been
\nflourished in private sector as her government also given permission when
\nanybody wanted to publish a newspaper.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said she constituted the welfare trust for the
\njournalist at her personal interest as she personally had observed the woe
\ndays of journalists particularly when they fall in financial crisis.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina thanked the daily Ittefaq and Machranga Television for
\ngiving donation to the journalist welfare trust fund, urging the owners of
\nother private newspapers and television channels to make their contribution
\nto the fund.<\/p>\n
The prime minister has assured the journalists of enacting the
\nBangladesh Newspaper Services Condition Act as soon as possible, adding a
\nbroadcasting commission act would also be enacted and an online policy would
\nbe framed to check spread of obscene contents in the online media.<\/p>\n
To resolve the housing problems of the journalists, poets, litterateur
\nand writers, the premier said the government would take steps to facilitate
\nthe journalists to buy residential flats on hire-purchase method and monthly
\ninstallment equivalent to monthly house rent.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina voiced her optimism that \u201cas an independent nation, we
\nwould live with dignity and her government is doing everything with sincerity
\nwhatever is needed for this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have tried our best to ensure welfare of the people. I don\u2019t know
\nhow much we became successful or didn\u2019t, and people would judge it,\u201d she
\nsaid, adding that \u201cas I have got the opportunity I\u2019m discharging my duties as
