\nDHAKA, Sept 18, 2018 (BSS) \u2013 The special court, trying the August 21,
\n2004 grenade attack case, today set October 10 for delivering its verdict
\nwrapping up the protracted trial of the attack that killed 24 people and
\nwounded some 500 others.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe trial process continued for a long time and now reached a stage\u2026the
\nhearing process ended today,\u201d judge Shahed Nuruddin of Dhaka\u2019s 1st Speedy
\nTrial Tribunal pronounced after 118 days of argument.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThe date for delivering the verdict is on 10-10-2018\u201d.<\/p>\n
Nuruddin said during the long period he tried to realise with \u201cmy heart\u201d
\nthe entire episode and observed the accused present on the dock \u201csitting in
\nmy judge\u2019s chair\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe judgment and order will be delivered taking into cognisance the
\nentire episode of the case and reviewing the legal aspects,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n
Assailants carried out the attack with military hardware \u201cArges
\ngrenades\u201d on an anti-terrorism rally of the then main opposition Awami League
\nwhile its president and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was visibly
\ntheir prime target but she narrowly escaped the assault sustaining permanent
\nhearing impairment.<\/p>\n
The prosecution side said they were satisfied as the time was now set for
\ndelivering the judgment of the much-talked-about the trial.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope we could have proved the allegation brought against all the
\naccused beyond doubt,\u201d chief prosecutor of the case Syed Rezaur Rahman said.<\/p>\n
He said the 21 August grenade attack was the most brutal, barbaric and
\nheinous incident in the recent history while it was aimed to kill Sheikh
\nHasina, the daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu, and also to expose
\nAwami League (AL) leadership to a state of vacuum.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no instance in the subcontinent when \u2018arges grenades\u2019 were used
\nagainst unarmed people,\u201d Rahman said.<\/p>\n
He said the prosecution produced before the court the evidence related to
\nthe sources of grenades and supply of finance, the attack plot; attempt to
\ndestroy evidence and successfully unearthed the \u201cJoj Mia\u201d episode formulated
\nby the then regime to create a smokescreen over the case.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe expect that the accused will get the capital punishment according to
\nthe law,\u201d Rahman said.<\/p>\n
Another prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said the mystery behind the
\ncase was exposed through frequent investigation into the incident where
\nmastermind of the attack found involved.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe motive of all accused in the case was identical,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sub-Inspector (SI) Faruk Hossain of Motijheel police station, AL leader
\nlate Abdul Jalil and Saber Hossain filed separate three cases with Motijheel
\npolice station after the grisly grenade attack.<\/p>\n
The president of Awami League\u2019s women associate body and late President
\nZillur Rahman\u2019s wife Ivy Rahman were among who killed in the grenade attack
\nwhile many survivors were crippled for life.<\/p>\n
Fifty two accused were held in the case while prosecution suggested an
\ninfluential quarter of the then BNP regime masterminded its shocking plot
\nengaging militant outfit HuJI and subsequently made desperate efforts to
\nprotect the assailants.<\/p>\n
A total of 31 accused, including two former ministers, faced the trial
\nin person while 18 including BNP senior vice president and ex-premier Khaleda
\nZia\u2019s elder son Tarique Rahman were tried in absentia.<\/p>\n
Rahman, now in London, and 17 others including several intelligence
\nofficials were earlier declared \u201cabsconding\u201d as they were on the run to evade
\njustice.<\/p>\n
Eight suspects, including three former police chiefs, were on bail as
\nthe trial was underway while the court today scrapped their bail and ordered
\ntheir confinement in jail with due facilities they deserved under law.<\/p>\n
