{"id":27141,"date":"2022-06-07T06:02:34","date_gmt":"2022-06-07T06:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deshmediabd.com\/?p=27141"},"modified":"2022-06-07T06:02:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-07T06:02:34","slug":"historic-6-point-day-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deshnews24.info\/?p=27141","title":{"rendered":"Historic 6-Point Day today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The historic Six-Point Day, marking the demand<br \/>\nfor autonomy for the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, is being observed<br \/>\ntoday across the country in a befitting manner.<\/p>\n<p>On June 7 in 1966, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman<br \/>\nlaunched a massive movement against the misrule of the Pakistanis on the<br \/>\nbasis of the 6-point demand, the Magna Carta of the Bengalis, demanding<br \/>\nautonomy for the then East Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven people, including Manu Mian, Shafique and Shamsul Haque, were gunned<br \/>\ndown by the police and paramilitary EPR on June 7, 1966 in Dhaka and<br \/>\nNarayanganj during a hartal called for the release of Bangabandhu and other<br \/>\nleaders detained for launching the Six-Point Movement against the then<br \/>\nbarbaric ruling clique.<\/p>\n<p>Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman launched his historic six-point political<br \/>\nand economic programme in Lahore on February 5 in 1966, aiming at attaining<br \/>\ngreater autonomy for the then East Pakistan in the backdrop of exploitation<br \/>\nand discrimination by the then Pakistani rulers.<\/p>\n<p>The six-point demands were creating provision in the constitution for a<br \/>\nFederation of Pakistan in its true sense based on the Lahore Resolution, the<br \/>\nfederal government will deal with only two subjects: Defence and Foreign<br \/>\nAffairs, introduction of two separate, but freely convertible currencies for<br \/>\nEast and West Pakistan, vesting the power of taxation and revenue collection<br \/>\nwith the federating units, maintaining two separate accounts for the foreign<br \/>\nexchange earnings of the two wings and creation a separate militia or<br \/>\nparamilitary force for East Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate<br \/>\nmessages on the eve of the six-point day.<\/p>\n<p>In his message, President Hamid paid rich tributes to the memories of Father<br \/>\nof the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all who embraced<br \/>\nmartyrdom for implementing the six-point demand.<\/p>\n<p>Terming the historic six-point demand as the milestone in the country&#8217;s long<br \/>\nstruggle for independence, he said the independence of Bangalee nation was<br \/>\nnot achieved in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>The President said the movement, which was initiated in 1948 with the demand<br \/>\nfor recognition of Bangla as a state language, had successfully culminated<br \/>\nthrough the 1952 Language Movement creating the foundation of Bangalee<br \/>\nnationalism.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Bangabandhu placed the historic six-point demand in Lahore in 1966 for<br \/>\nautonomy of Bangalee nation in continuation of formation of Juktofront in<br \/>\n1954, movement against autocratic rule in 1958 and 1962 Education Commission<br \/>\nmovement.<\/p>\n<p>Through the six-point demand, Hamid said, Bangabandhu presented political,<br \/>\neconomic, social and cultural interests, including along with administrative<br \/>\nstructure, powers of the central government, monetary policy, revenue and tax<br \/>\npolicy, foreign trade and the formation of regional forces, of East Bengal.<\/p>\n<p>The President said the six-point demand contained the framework of<br \/>\nindependence and autonomy of Bangalee nation.<\/p>\n<p>After the announcement of six-point demand, he said, the Pakistani rulers<br \/>\ntortured Bangabandhu inhumanly and repeatedly arrested him, but could not<br \/>\ndeter him from the six-point demand.<\/p>\n<p>The historic six-point is not only the charter for emancipation of Bangalees<br \/>\nrather it is the source of inspiration for movement for emancipation of the<br \/>\nrepressed and persecuted people all over the world, the president added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that the young generation will be inspired with patriotism by<br \/>\nlearning from Bangabandhu&#8217;s six-point demand,&#8221; Hamid said and urged all to<br \/>\nfulfill Bangabandhu&#8217;s dream of building a happy and prosperous &#8216;Sonar Bangla&#8217;<br \/>\nfree from hunger and poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, paid glowing tributes to the<br \/>\nmemories of all martyrs of the struggle for independence including those of<br \/>\nthe June 7 and said that the historic June 7 is an unforgettable and<br \/>\nsignificant day in the history of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The historic movement for six-point demand, declared by the greatest Bengali<br \/>\nof all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, got a<br \/>\nnew dimension on June 7, 1966,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The premier said police and the then EPR had opened fire on unarmed people<br \/>\nduring the observing hartal called by Awami League to realize the six-point<br \/>\ndemand, the charter of freedom of the Bangalee nation.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven people including Manu Mian, Shafique and Shamsul Haque in Dhaka and<br \/>\nNarayanganj had embraced martyrdom on that day, Sheikh Hasina added.<\/p>\n<p>The present government is firmly committed to keep intact the democratic<br \/>\nrights of the people imbued with the spirit of all democratic movements and<br \/>\nstruggles, including the historic June 7, she said, adding &#8220;We are taking the<br \/>\ncountry forward with the spirit of the Liberation War. We are working to<br \/>\nreach the benefits of independence to all people of the country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that Bangladesh is now the 31st largest economy in the world with the<br \/>\nGDP size reaching $465 billion and per capita income $2,824, the premier said<br \/>\ncent percent people of the country are now enjoying the electricity facility.<\/p>\n<p>Rural people are now availing all civic amenities as the government reached<br \/>\ndigital technology at the doorsteps of rural people, she said, adding, &#8220;We<br \/>\nare giving houses to the homeless people so that no one in the country remain<br \/>\nhomeless&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh will stand with its head high in the world and be a developed,<br \/>\nprosperous and modern state by 2041, Sheikh Hasina said, adding, &#8220;We will<br \/>\nbuild the Sonar Bangladesh as dreamt by father of the nation by realizing the<br \/>\ndream of the martyrs of June 7&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>To mark the day, different socio-political organisations including ruling<br \/>\nAwami League, its associate bodies and like-minded socio-cultural<br \/>\norganisations have taken elaborate programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The Awami League&#8217;s programmes include hoisting of the national and party<br \/>\nflags atop Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi and central office in<br \/>\nthe capital and all unit offices across the country today.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders and workers of Awami League and its front organisations will place<br \/>\nfloral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban<br \/>\nat Dhanmondi.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, a discussion will be held at AL central office in the city&#8217;s<br \/>\nBangabandhu Avenue at 4pm. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will<br \/>\naddress the discussion through videoconferencing.<\/p>\n<p>Former Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Bangladesh<br \/>\nSangbad Sangstha (BSS) Board of Directors Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique<br \/>\nsaid actually six-point demand brought Bangladesh&#8217;s independence.<\/p>\n<p>Bangabandhu&#8217;s foresight and political prudence were so keen that he turned<br \/>\nthe 6-point demand into a one-point demand and called for the independence<br \/>\nmovement of Bengal, he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The historic Six-Point Day, marking the demand for autonomy for the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, is being observed today across the country in a befitting manner.
