The historic Six-Point Day, marking the demand
\nfor autonomy for the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, is being observed
\ntoday across the country in a befitting manner.<\/p>\n
On June 7 in 1966, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
\nlaunched a massive movement against the misrule of the Pakistanis on the
\nbasis of the 6-point demand, the Magna Carta of the Bengalis, demanding
\nautonomy for the then East Pakistan.<\/p>\n
Eleven people, including Manu Mian, Shafique and Shamsul Haque, were gunned
\ndown by the police and paramilitary EPR on June 7, 1966 in Dhaka and
\nNarayanganj during a hartal called for the release of Bangabandhu and other
\nleaders detained for launching the Six-Point Movement against the then
\nbarbaric ruling clique.<\/p>\n
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman launched his historic six-point political
\nand economic programme in Lahore on February 5 in 1966, aiming at attaining
\ngreater autonomy for the then East Pakistan in the backdrop of exploitation
\nand discrimination by the then Pakistani rulers.<\/p>\n
The six-point demands were creating provision in the constitution for a
\nFederation of Pakistan in its true sense based on the Lahore Resolution, the
\nfederal government will deal with only two subjects: Defence and Foreign
\nAffairs, introduction of two separate, but freely convertible currencies for
\nEast and West Pakistan, vesting the power of taxation and revenue collection
\nwith the federating units, maintaining two separate accounts for the foreign
\nexchange earnings of the two wings and creation a separate militia or
\nparamilitary force for East Pakistan.<\/p>\n
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate
\nmessages on the eve of the six-point day.<\/p>\n
In his message, President Hamid paid rich tributes to the memories of Father
\nof the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all who embraced
\nmartyrdom for implementing the six-point demand.<\/p>\n
Terming the historic six-point demand as the milestone in the country’s long
\nstruggle for independence, he said the independence of Bangalee nation was
\nnot achieved in a single day.<\/p>\n
The President said the movement, which was initiated in 1948 with the demand
\nfor recognition of Bangla as a state language, had successfully culminated
\nthrough the 1952 Language Movement creating the foundation of Bangalee
\nnationalism.<\/p>\n
Later, Bangabandhu placed the historic six-point demand in Lahore in 1966 for
\nautonomy of Bangalee nation in continuation of formation of Juktofront in
\n1954, movement against autocratic rule in 1958 and 1962 Education Commission
\nmovement.<\/p>\n
Through the six-point demand, Hamid said, Bangabandhu presented political,
\neconomic, social and cultural interests, including along with administrative
\nstructure, powers of the central government, monetary policy, revenue and tax
\npolicy, foreign trade and the formation of regional forces, of East Bengal.<\/p>\n
The President said the six-point demand contained the framework of
\nindependence and autonomy of Bangalee nation.<\/p>\n
After the announcement of six-point demand, he said, the Pakistani rulers
\ntortured Bangabandhu inhumanly and repeatedly arrested him, but could not
\ndeter him from the six-point demand.<\/p>\n
The historic six-point is not only the charter for emancipation of Bangalees
\nrather it is the source of inspiration for movement for emancipation of the
\nrepressed and persecuted people all over the world, the president added.<\/p>\n
“I believe that the young generation will be inspired with patriotism by
\nlearning from Bangabandhu’s six-point demand,” Hamid said and urged all to
\nfulfill Bangabandhu’s dream of building a happy and prosperous ‘Sonar Bangla’
\nfree from hunger and poverty.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, paid glowing tributes to the
\nmemories of all martyrs of the struggle for independence including those of
\nthe June 7 and said that the historic June 7 is an unforgettable and
\nsignificant day in the history of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
“The historic movement for six-point demand, declared by the greatest Bengali
\nof all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, got a
\nnew dimension on June 7, 1966,” she said.<\/p>\n
The premier said police and the then EPR had opened fire on unarmed people
\nduring the observing hartal called by Awami League to realize the six-point
\ndemand, the charter of freedom of the Bangalee nation.<\/p>\n
Eleven people including Manu Mian, Shafique and Shamsul Haque in Dhaka and
\nNarayanganj had embraced martyrdom on that day, Sheikh Hasina added.<\/p>\n
The present government is firmly committed to keep intact the democratic
\nrights of the people imbued with the spirit of all democratic movements and
\nstruggles, including the historic June 7, she said, adding “We are taking the
\ncountry forward with the spirit of the Liberation War. We are working to
\nreach the benefits of independence to all people of the country”.<\/p>\n
Noting that Bangladesh is now the 31st largest economy in the world with the
\nGDP size reaching $465 billion and per capita income $2,824, the premier said
\ncent percent people of the country are now enjoying the electricity facility.<\/p>\n
Rural people are now availing all civic amenities as the government reached
\ndigital technology at the doorsteps of rural people, she said, adding, “We
\nare giving houses to the homeless people so that no one in the country remain
\nhomeless”.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh will stand with its head high in the world and be a developed,
\nprosperous and modern state by 2041, Sheikh Hasina said, adding, “We will
\nbuild the Sonar Bangladesh as dreamt by father of the nation by realizing the
\ndream of the martyrs of June 7”.<\/p>\n
To mark the day, different socio-political organisations including ruling
\nAwami League, its associate bodies and like-minded socio-cultural
\norganisations have taken elaborate programmes.<\/p>\n
The Awami League’s programmes include hoisting of the national and party
\nflags atop Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi and central office in
\nthe capital and all unit offices across the country today.<\/p>\n
Leaders and workers of Awami League and its front organisations will place
\nfloral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban
\nat Dhanmondi.<\/p>\n
Besides, a discussion will be held at AL central office in the city’s
\nBangabandhu Avenue at 4pm. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will
\naddress the discussion through videoconferencing.<\/p>\n
Former Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Bangladesh
\nSangbad Sangstha (BSS) Board of Directors Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique
\nsaid actually six-point demand brought Bangladesh’s independence.<\/p>\n
Bangabandhu’s foresight and political prudence were so keen that he turned
\nthe 6-point demand into a one-point demand and called for the independence
