The 72nd birth anniversary of Sheikh
\nKamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
\nMujibur Rahman, was observed amid different programmes today.<\/p>\n
Born on August 5, 1949 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Kamal was a
\nformer executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra
\nLeague (BCL), the student wing of Awami League (AL).<\/p>\n
Marking the anniversary, Awami League General Secretary and Road
\nTransport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today paid homage to
\nShaheed Sheikh Kamal by placing a wreath on his grave at Banani
\ngraveyard here on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.<\/p>\n
Later, Quader along with the party’s central leaders laid another
\nwreath on behalf of AL in the morning.<\/p>\n
AL Presidium Members Dr Abdur Razzaque, Advocate Jahangir Kabir
\nNanak and Abdur Rahman, Joint General Secretary and Information and
\nBroadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Joint General Secretaries
\nMahbubul-Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretary
\nAhmed Hossain, Mirza Azam and SM Kamal Hossain, Science and Technology
\nAffairs Secretary Abdus Sabur, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua
\nand Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan were present on the occasion,
\namong others.<\/p>\n
Besides, Dhaka City AL north and south units, Mahila Awami League,
\nJubo Mahila League, Awami Swechchhasebak League, Jubo League, Sramik
\nLeague, Krishak League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Bangabandhu
\nSangskritik Jote and different cultural bodies paid homage to Sheikh
\nKamal on his birth anniversary.<\/p>\n
Later, Quran khawani, milad and doa mahfil were arranged at the
\nBanani graveyard mosque.<\/p>\n
Earlier, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader along with party’s
\ncentral leaders placed wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal at
\nDhanmondi Abahani Club here.<\/p>\n
Marking the birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the Ministry of
\nYouth and Sports for the first time today gave Sheikh Kamal National
\nSports Council Award to 10 persons including sportsmen, journalist,
\norganisers and two organisations in seven categories for outstanding
\ncontribution to the sports arena.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually joined the award-giving
\nceremony as the chief guest at Shaheed Sheikh Kamal Auditorium in
\nNational Sports Council (NSC) Tower from her official Ganabhaban
\nresidence here and handed over the award.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the Prime Minister, Senior Secretary of the Youth and
\nSports Ministry Md. Akhter Hossain handed over the award to the
\nrecipients.<\/p>\n
The premier also unveiled a memorial book titled “Forever Youth:
\nUnique Sheikh Kamal” in Bangla and English languages on the occasion.<\/p>\n
State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Zahid Ahsan Russel, MP,
\npresided over the function while its Senior Secretary Md. Akhter
\nHossain gave the welcome address. Zahid Ahsan Russel joined the
\nprogramme virtually from Tokyo.<\/p>\n
A documentary on life and works of Sheikh Kamal was screened and
\nspecial munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of Sheikh Kamal’s
\nsoul.<\/p>\n
Dhaka City South unit of AL arranged a discussion at AL’s
\nBangabandhu Avenue central office on the occasion of Sheikh Kamal’s
\nbirth anniversary.<\/p>\n
AL Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque
\naddressed it as the chief guest while AL Joint General Secretaries
\nMahbubul-Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretary
\nMirza Azam spoke on the occasion, among others.<\/p>\n
Dhaka City South AL President Abu Ahmed Mannafi chaired the discussion.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Russel Jatiyo Shishu Kishore Parishad arranged a discussion
\nmarking the birth anniversary. State Minister for Shipping Khalid
\nMahmud Chowdhury and AL Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua
\naddressed it.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Kamal completed his matriculation from Shaheen School, Dhaka
\nin 1967 and Higher Secondary Certificate Examination from Dhaka
\nCollege in 1969, according to wikipedia.<\/p>\n
He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Sociology
\nDepartment at Dhaka University. He practiced sitar at Chhayanaut, a
\nschool of music.<\/p>\n
Since his boyhood, Kamal was very much enthusiastic about different
\nsports including football, cricket, hockey and basket-ball. He was the
\nfounding president of Abahani Krira Chakra and a founding member of
\nDhaka Theatre.<\/p>\n
He was one of the pioneers of modern football in Bangladesh.
\n Sheikh Kamal was also active in student politics.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Kamal was commissioned in the Mukti Bahini after receiving
\ntraining from the first war course in the independent Bangladesh and
\nserved as ADC of General MAG Osmani, the commander-in-chief of the
\nLiberation War in 1971.<\/p>\n
After the country’s independence, Sheikh Kamal retired from the army
\nand paid attention to study. Kamal served as a member of the Jatiya
\nChhatra League central committee, a wing of Bangladesh Krishak, Sramik
\nAwami League (BAKSAL).<\/p>\n
