{"id":12844,"date":"2021-07-12T07:36:42","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T07:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deshmediabd.com\/?p=12844"},"modified":"2021-07-12T07:36:42","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T07:36:42","slug":"thailand-sees-tougher-covid-19-curbs-bite-including-bangkok-curfew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deshnews24.info\/?p=12844","title":{"rendered":"Thailand sees tougher Covid-19 curbs bite, including Bangkok curfew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deshmediabd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-4777-1626068278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"704\" height=\"396\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/deshnews24.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-4777-1626068278.jpg 704w, https:\/\/deshnews24.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-4777-1626068278-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/deshnews24.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-4777-1626068278-600x337.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/> Over ten million people were placed under fresh Covid-19 restrictions and a curfew in the Thai capital Monday, as<br \/>\nthe kingdom battles a surge of cases worsened by the highly infectious Alpha and Delta variants.<\/p>\n<p>   Thailand has so far recorded more than 326,300 cases and 2,711 deaths &#8211;with the bulk of them coming in this latest wave that kicked off in April.<\/p>\n<p>   First detected in clubs frequented by the Thai elite and politicians at an upscale Bangkok nightlife district, the surge in infections has been<br \/>\nexacerbated by a slow vaccine rollout and limited testing capacity.<\/p>\n<p>   In addition to the capital, nine other provinces that have seen a steady uptick in infections saw more restrictions bite.<\/p>\n<p>   Police checkpoints sprung up across Bangkok in the early hours of Monday as a curfew from 9 pm to 4 am came into force, with police wearing masks and<br \/>\nfacial shields stopping cars in the centre of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>   Residents are barred from gathering in groups of more than five people, while public transport networks will shut from 9 pm.<\/p>\n<p>   Supermarkets, restaurants, banks, pharmacies and electronics stores with in malls will be able to stay open but other shops have shuttered.<\/p>\n<p>   &#8211; &#8216;So slow&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>   The government of Prayut Chan-O-Cha has come under vociferous criticism for its handling of the pandemic &#8212; from its management and procurement of<br \/>\nvaccines to its ad hoc enforcement of rules to prevent the spread of Covid &#8212; and anger is high among Thais at the new measures.<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;The government decided to impose a lockdown but they don&#8217;t have compensatory measures for the people whatsoever,&#8221; said restaurant owner<br \/>\nArphawan Larangam.<\/p>\n<p>   Some say the movement restrictions should have come sooner before the brunt of the new highly contagious variants were felt among the population.<\/p>\n<p>   &#8220;The government does everything so slow. If they really want to impose a lockdown, they should&#8217;ve done it a lot sooner,&#8221; said Jit, a university<br \/>\nstudent.<\/p>\n<p>   The virus has hit poor communities the hardest, especially those living in Bangkok&#8217;s slums, where social distancing is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>   Long lines of people waited at two free testing clinics to get swabbed last week, with local media showing people camped under a tollway in Khlong<br \/>\nToei district &#8212; where Bangkok&#8217;s largest slum is located &#8212; as they waited for negative results before going home to their families.<\/p>\n<p>   One temple on the outskirts of Bangkok providing free funeral services to those unable to pay has been overwhelmed with the bodies, with its<br \/>\ncrematorium barely able to handle the demand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over ten million people were placed under fresh Covid-19 restrictions and a curfew in the Thai capital Monday, as the kingdom battles a surge of cases worsened by the highly infectious Alpha and Delta variants.
