{"id":11088,"date":"2021-06-07T07:04:23","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T07:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deshmediabd.com\/?p=11088"},"modified":"2021-06-07T16:46:08","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T16:46:08","slug":"us-vice-president-arrives-in-guatemala-to-bring-message-of-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deshnews24.info\/?p=11088","title":{"rendered":"US vice president arrives in Guatemala to bring message of \u2018hope\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2013 US Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Guatemala Sunday, bringing a message of \u201chope\u201d to a region hammered by Covid-19 and which is the source of most of the undocumented migrants seeking entry to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Harris, who will also visit Mexico, is making her first journey abroad as President Joe Biden\u2019s deputy with an eye toward tackling the root causes of migration from the region \u2014 one of the thorniest issues facing the White House.<\/p>\n<p>She landed at an air force base outside Guatemala City on Sunday evening, where she was greeted by Foreign Minister Pedro Brolo and US Ambassador William Popp.<\/p>\n<p>Harris will meet with President Alejandro Giammattei on Monday before leaving to meet with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am certain that it will be a successful visit and that we will continue to strengthen bilateral relations for the benefit of our peoples,\u201d Giammattei tweeted as he extended a \u201cmost cordial welcome\u201d to Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Harris also has plans to meet with community, labor and business leaders during the trip, according to her team.<\/p>\n<p>Her exit from Washington was briefly delayed when her plane was forced to turn around soon after take-off due to a technical problem, and she had to take a different plane.<\/p>\n<p>Harris said she hopes to have \u201cvery frank and honest discussions\u201d with the two leaders about corruption, crime and violence.<\/p>\n<p>Giammattei, speaking to CBS ahead of the visit, seemed to agree, saying Harris \u201cdoesn\u2019t hold back, which is good. She is frank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detentions of undocumented travelers along the US-Mexico border, including unaccompanied minors, hit a 15-year high in April. Nearly 180,000 people were intercepted \u2014 more than 80 percent of them coming from Mexico or the so-called Northern Triangle of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to give people a sense of hope \u2026 that if they stay, things will get better,\u201d Harris has previously said, after Biden tasked her with leading diplomatic efforts on the issue in March.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Vaccines, TPS, Title 42 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Donation of coronavirus vaccines by the United States to the region is also expected to be up for discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Harris already addressed the subject over the phone with Giammattei and Lopez Obrador on Thursday, just before Biden announced the shipment of a first batch of six million doses to be distributed in Central America and the Caribbean through the global Covax program, plus others to be sent directly from Washington to partner countries such as Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>For security and democracy expert Rebecca Bill Chavez, \u201ca real commitment\u201d on the number of doses destined for the Northern Triangle would be \u201cone very positive outcome\u201d of Harris\u2019s trip.<\/p>\n<p>Another potential topic is the possibility of granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Guatemalans living in the United States, allowing them to work legally.<\/p>\n<p>And there could be talk in Mexico of ending \u201cTitle 42,\u201d a Trump-era coronavirus policy allowing the immediate deportation of undocumented migrants \u2014 even those who arrive seeking asylum.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018A lot tougher\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The vice president\u2019s trip to Central America is part of the Biden administration\u2019s promise of a more humane immigration policy \u2014 in contrast to the hardline approach taken by his predecessor Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>But Harris faces challenges even more complicated than the ones Biden dealt with as Barack Obama\u2019s vice president, when he was charged with handling the same matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conditions have deteriorated dramatically since 2014,\u201d said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank, referring to a worsening economic situation and increasing violence, both exacerbated by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019s work is \u201ca lot tougher,\u201d Shifter said, \u201cbecause the (country) partners are far more problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between Washington and San Salvador has been tense since the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly, led by the ruling party, fired judges and the attorney general on May 1, and after the US labeled members of President Nayib Bukele\u2019s government corrupt.<\/p>\n<p>And Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was implicated in cocaine trafficking in a New York court earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>A group of 18 US Democratic senators wrote a letter to Harris ahead of her trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnsuring stability in Central America directly supports the national interests of the United States,\u201d said the group, led by Foreign Relations Committee head Bob Menendez.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican opposition on the other hand has accused Biden of creating a \u201ccrisis\u201d on the country\u2019s southern border by failing to rein in immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Congress must still decide whether to approve the $861 million Biden has asked for next year as part of his $4 billion plan to take on the issue of undocumented immigration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2013 US Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Guatemala Sunday, bringing a message of \u201chope\u201d to a region hammered by Covid-19 and which is the source of most of the undocumented migrants seeking entry to the United States.
